Bye bye SkyDrive…..Welcome OneDrive

OneDrive has opened it’s doors today. The new brand is still rolling out as we speak, so when you still see the SkyDrive logo on http://skydrive.com (when loggon on) you’re not yet ‘migrated’ to the new environment.

At this moment the new ‘co-owner’ functionality isn’t available yet, but there are some new Upgrade Options available when you’re on OneDrive. On SkyDrive you could upgrade to a 50GB, 100GB or 200GB plan.

OneDrive gives you some more options : 50GB, 100GB, 200GB and 500GB. Next to the ‘normal’ upgrade options, there is also a Special Offer available : Office 365 + 20GB OneDrive Storage. Office 365 Home Premium includes 20GB of OneDrive storage for each household member (up to 5) and the latest Office applications for 5 PCs or Macs and 5 mobile devices.

At this moment the 500GB option isn’t visible at my own OneDrive, but this will probably change soon.

SkyDrive will be rebranded to OneDrive

Microsoft has announced today that their SkyDrive brand will be renamed to OneDrive (and SkyDrive Pro will be rebranded to OneDrive for Business). If you’re already using SkyDrive (when you’re a Windows Phone or Windows 8 user you probably are), nothing will change but the name. All your files will seamlessly move to the new brand. Microsoft has published a nice video on their OneDrive.com website (click here) and you can leave your email address, so they can let you know when OneDrive has arrived.

Xbox One, OneNote…and now OneDrive…sounds nice, don’t you think? Leave your comments below!

New Apps coming to XBOX starting with SkyDrive

Today Major Nelson announced a list of 40 new apps coming to XBOX 360 before Spring 2013! Because I live in the Netherlands not all Apps will become available here. Please check out the blog post at MajorNelson.com for the entire list

For some of the Apps it’s not sure if they will be available in the Netherlands, but the following Apps certainly will appear on a Dutch Xbox near you:

  • RTL XL (already available)
    watch missed RTL (4, 5, 7, 8) programs
  • SkyDrive (available on December 11th)
SkyDrive is the place to store your files so you can access them from virtually any device. With SkyDrive for Xbox, you can easily view your photos and videos on your TV. You can also play slideshows and view photos and videos shared with you. For more information, visit the Inside SkyDrive blog
  • Karaoke (available on December 11th)
Karaoke provides access to more than 8,000 songs from the latest hits to the oldies but goodies, available on Xbox LIVE. Your avatar will go on stage and sing with a full complement of stage props and back band. Use SmartGlass to play/stop/pause, browse the database and lyrics or to add songs to the playlist. Songs don’t require any download and will playback immediately via streaming for a robust karaoke experience.
  • Eredivisie Live
watch live soccer games from the Dutch soccer league
  • LiveSport.tv (not available yet?)
    watch sports
  • Pathe Thuis
    watch/rent movies
  • SBS
you can probably watch missed SBS (6 / Net 5 / Veronica) programs, but there is no info about the app yet
  • Ziggo
watch live tv with your Ziggo subscription, just like the iOS and Android App. In the near future Video on Demand will be added to the App. The Ziggo Company Twitter account told me that recording live tv will also become available in a later stadium.

Windows 8 App Update : SkyDrive

On October 5th Steven Sinofsky announced that the built-in Apps for Windows 8 will receive an update. The strange thing is that he announced that the Bing App would be the first one, but strangely enough I already received an update for the SkyDrive App. For now I don’t see an update for the Bing App arriving, but the day (Saturday) isn’t over yet…

Check out the differences below (click on the image for a larger view).

And there are also a few ‘New features’  available with this update:

  • Search within SkyDrive
  • Rename and move folders and files
  • New first-run experience (see the upper right screenshot)
  • Custom sort order

I also discovered a feature from which I’m not sure if it was already available in the ‘old version’. Please leave a comment if you have also found it in the old one…

SkyDrive Update 06
Access ‘Recent’ and ‘Shard’ documents

SkyDrive Update 07
Open documents with Office Web App

SkyDrive Update 08
Search within SkyDrive

SkyDrive Update 09
Rename and Move file and folders

I couldn’t find the Custom sort order yet, but the Search within SkyDrive also didn’t work just right after the update (indexing?). If you have found the feature, please let me know through the comments!

Upgrade the 7GB SkyDrive Storage to 25 GB (for free)

In my previous post I mentioned that I could only use 7 GB (of my 25 GB storage) with the SkyDrive App on my iPad (and on Windows). When I clicked around a bit I found a way to upgrade your storage for free. Just right click the SkyDrive icon in your taskbar and select Manage Storage. A web browser will pop up and there you can ‘upgrade’ your free storage to 25 GB!

Finally….SkyDrive for Windows and Mac!

Everybody with a Windows Live  Microsoft Account owns one…..a SkyDrive, before today I wasn’t really using it. When I read the new blogpost from Steven Sinofsky on the Building Windows 8 blog I really can start using it…on my Windows 8 PC, my Mac, iPad, iPhone and (last but not least) my Windows Phone!

There is an installer for every operating system (ehh…they forgot the Android version…).Just go to http://apps.live.com/skydrive to download the appropriate version for your device. Check out the screenshots below.

Wednesday = Windows Live 2 wave

This is the counter that you see (to be correct that was the clock at Monday evening 21:44 GMT+1) when you visit https://www.countdowntobetter.com. This is the counter that counts down to the 2nd Windows Live wave. In other words in about 1 day (and a few hours) Microsoft will launch the final versions of several of it’s Windows Live Beta products. This will include, Messenger, Writer (at last), Mail, Photo Gallery, Famility Safety and (the online service) SkyDrive. As you can see at the Windows Live Betas home page. Let’s hope the installer works fine on x64 Windows. The beta installer didn’t work for me (it was a known issue @ beta support). If the installer isn’t working, visit this knowledgebase article for the first help.

Windows Live SkyDrive ook beschikbaar in NL

Windows Live SkyDrive Beta
